font booklet initial designs

Project Brief:

Project brief for Cantarell font poster and booklet

The goal of this project is to create a fun interesting design that centers on the typeface Cantarell. The poster will be a simple design using only three colors throughout the layout. The colors I have chosen to use are an opaque yellow, red and black, which I believe, will make an interesting aesthetically pleasing layout. The booklet will be designed in the same manner in order to ensure cohesiveness. The booklet will feature all the different styles of the typeface and utilize the same color scheme.  The goal of the poster and booklet is to show the different type styles as well as the different letterforms.

final calendar design

For the final composition of my strength calendars I stuck with the art deco style and decided to simplify a few things. the first was to get rid of the white border around the month I believed it started to make the calendar look a bit too crowded and wasn' t really necessary. I then decided to change the year at the top by adding type for the number 13 instead of using actual numbers, the one and three didn't align quite right and I thought the problem was solved by just spelling it out, whilst also making a more interesting composition. I also used color lines to separate the weeks making the calendar quick and easy to read.
For my weakness calendar I decided to use a horizontal art board and a serif font because to be completely honest I hate using serif fonts in typography, I also used one color and overlapped layers over each other with different variations of opacity. I was pleased with the outcome. I also decided to leave a lot of negative space for the dates and large letterforms to take up the negative space around it. I separated the days with thin lines at the top which I believe makes the weakness calendar easier to read as well.

Current Work

The critique today inspired me with some creative changes to my work. I believe making my art deco pieces lager in scale will help me to position the images better as well as giving me more negative space to use. I believe for my weakness poster I really need to differentiate the design from my art deco pieces. I believe staying away from breaking up the word into segments and changing the hierarchy and placement of objects will help me to achieve a more cohesive and interesting design.

September and August

I went back and fiddled with the august design trying to line up the letters a bit better making them more symmetrical and then used this template for August to keep the calendar coherent.

Rough Draft

These are a few of my rough drafts for my september and august calendar, I am focusing on an art deco style with clean lines and stacked typography. I originally did not like the gradient behind the letters as it makes it far too hard to read but was becoming frustrated and chose the first image as a stoping point before butchering it too badly out of blind rage. I then came back and chose a different color palette and simplified the design more, giving it a more clean look.
